Sweet Molasses Bread

  • 1 package rapid rise yeast
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 6 Tbsp molasses
  • 2 Tbsp Crisco
  • 1/2 Tbsp kosher salt
  • 6 cups flour
  1. in a mixing bowl, add 1 cup water, yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, set aside for 10 min
  2. in another mixing bowl, combine 1 cup water w/ molasses, Crisco, and salt
  3. add the mixtures together, with the remaining sugar, and mix until smooth
  4. place mixture in the mixer bowl, and attach the bread hook
  5. gradually add flour 1 cup at a time with the mixer on low, and allow it to knead until it cleans the mixer bowl
  6. continue kneading by hand until elastic
  7. set on flat surface, cover w/ damp towel for 15 min
  8. divide in half, punch down, form into 2 semi flattened balls
  9. grease cookie sheet, place balls on sheet to proof for at least 1 hour
  10. bake at 350 for 45 - 50 min, until hollow when tapped
