This is an old revision of the document!

Creating A Remote VPN Connection

  1. Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections
  2. File > New Connection
  3. Click Next
  4. Click “Connect to the network at my workplace“, and click Next
  5. If you are connecting via the Internet, then check “Virtual Private Network connection.” If you are using a dial up modem to connect, check “Dial-up connection.” Click Next.
  1. Type a name for this connection, such as “5th Ave Office.” Click Next.
  2. If your Internet is always on, check “Do not dial the initial connection.” If you dial out to get on the Internet, you may want to check “Automatically dial this initial connection” and specify which connection to use, otherwise you will need to make sure your Internet is active before attempting a VPN connection. Click Next.
  3. Type the Host Name or IP Address of the remote computer waiting for a VPN connection. Click Next.
  4. Click Finish.
  1. Type a name for this connection, such as “5th Ave Office.” Click Next.
  2. You will be prompted for a phone number to use. Enter the number for the modem waiting for a VPN connection, and click Next.
  3. Click Finish.
  1. You will need to enter a user name and password before attempting your connection.
  2. If you click Properties, you can change the phone number or IP Address of your connection.
  3. It is recommended that your existing Internet connection remain active while you are using the VPN. To accomplish this, prior to clicking “Connect”…
    1. Click “Properties”
    2. Click the “Networking” tab
    3. Highlight “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click Properties
    4. Click “Advanced”
    5. UNCHECK “Use default gateway on remote network”, and click OK
    6. Click OK, Click OK, and after entering your user name and password, click Connect
    • Note: for this to work, your local subnet must differ from the remote subnet range. For instance, if your local IP subnet is 192.168.1.xxx, you cannot do this if the remote subnet is also 192.168.1.xxx. You should change your subnet configuration to something else, or if it is more efficient, change the office subnet you are connecting to, for instance, to 192.168.2.xxx. Contact your administrator for further details.
  • If you checked the box before clicking “Finish” to put a shortcut on your desktop, then you can just click the shortcut on your Desktop, enter your user name and password, and click “Connect.”
  • Otherwise, your connection can be found at Start > Network Connections, or Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections. Once there, click on the appropriate connection, enter your user name and password, and click “Connect.”
